I consider James Lavelle to be one of my idols since I was 16, so to recieve an invite to the private viewing of Daydreaming with...UNKLE presents...THE ROAD:SOHO, celebrating 25 years of UNKLE at the Lazarides gallery, I was ecstatic.
James is a visionary, a creative guru not afraid to take risks, branch out into so many various fields. In 1996 James collaborated with Dj Shadow under the name UNKLE, releasing the album Psyence Fiction, featuring a number of collaborations such as Richard Ashcroft, Mike D, Badly Drawn Boy and Tom Yorke. This has since been the case with all of the albums released to date, the list of names I could mention are diverse and influential. This exhibition consisted of a pop-up shop featuring rare counter cultural artefacts and vintage collectables (which was immediately congested as the doors opened) a virtual reality installation, new music and video works, artwork, featuring one of my favourite graffiti artists 'Futura' and rare designer toys.
This viewing was busy, very busy but you could sense that everyone there also had a passion and dedication to the UNKLE movement, a thoroughly enjoyable evening and recommendation to anyone who would like to explore how music, art and street culture can be infused together.
Long live UNKLE, and long live the reign....
